Guest post: Refurbished Computers: What You Need to Know

Most people don’t realise that you don’t need to buy brand spanking new when looking to purchase a laptop. Depending on what you want and how much you have to spend, you can buy a laptop in near new condition for a bargain price and it’s only had its seals broken. Refurbished laptops are a viable option for those who want the latest model but can’t quite afford the price tag.

Refurbishment

A refurbished computer is one that has been returned to the manufacturer, tested and then put back on sale at a reduced price. It may undergo data wiping, testing, cosmetic repair and/or replacement of defective minor PC components to make it as good as new. A PC is considered to be a refurbished PC if it has the original motherboard, or a replacement was made of a defective motherboard with one of exactly the same make, model and specification. These vary from computers that have literally only had their seals broken to ones that are only good for parts. They are split into Grades A-C, depending on their quality.

Grade A

Either Open Box or refurbished second hand units, these machines will be fully functional and have an operating system installed. They also usually come with a warranty. Open Box means that they have been returned by the customer and therefore have hardly been used.

Grade B

These will be units that are second hand, but will still have been texted and cleaned. Usually at a really low price, they will not be in the original packaging and will not have an operating system installed. They may also show signs of use on the outer casing.

Grade C

These are faulty computers that are only good for spare parts or repair. The products have no warranty and cannot be returned.
